Humboldt County makes recommendation for interim public defender
KRCR News Channel 7 November 28, 2017
EUREKA, Calif. - The county is scheduled to recommend Kaleb Cockrum
as interim public defender at the Dec. 5 Board of Supervisors
meeting, according to Sean Quincey, Senior Administrative Analyst for
Humboldt County.
Former Humboldt County Public Defender, David Marcus, resigned from
the position on Nov. 22.
In a brief resignation letter, Marcus said, "it makes sense" for him
to resign. The letter does not provide much detail into Marcus' move,
but the decision to leave the public defender role came amid
criticism and a lawsuit from a local attorney claiming Marcus was not
qualified for the position.
In the Nov. 22 resignation letter obtained by North Coast News, Marcus stated:
"I appreciate the opportunity to have served as Humboldt County
Public Defender. I have concluded that it makes sense for me to
resign, effective immediately. I will assist to facilitate the
transition. I appreciate the Board's agreement to provide me two
months' severance.
Best Regards,
David G. Marcus"
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors said the appointment of
Kaleb Cockrum as interim public defender would retroactive to Dec. 4,
and will continue in the role until a permanent appointment is chosen.
